RGB vs CMYK: Why Colors Look Different on Screens and in Print #
If you work with digital designs or printed materials, you may eventually encounter the terms RGB and CMYK.
These terms describe different color systems used to create images.
Understanding the difference helps explain why colors sometimes look slightly different on a screen compared to a printed page.
What Is RGB? #
RGB stands for:
- Red
- Green
- Blue
This is the color system used by digital screens.
Devices like:
- phones
- tablets
- laptops
- televisions
- computer monitors
create colors by mixing different amounts of red, green, and blue light.
By combining these three colors of light, screens can produce millions of different colors.
Because screens use light to create images, RGB colors often appear very bright and vibrant.
What Is CMYK? #
CMYK stands for:
- Cyan
- Magenta
- Yellow
- Black
This color system is used in printing.
Printers do not use light to create images. Instead, they mix tiny dots of ink on paper.
These four ink colors combine in different ways to produce the final printed image.
Because printed ink works differently from light on a screen, some colors cannot appear exactly the same when printed.
Why Colors Look Different in Print #
RGB can create very bright and vivid colors because it uses light.
CMYK relies on physical ink, which has natural limitations.
As a result, certain colors that look bright on a screen may appear slightly different when printed.
For example:
- neon colors
- extremely bright blues
- very vibrant greens
These colors may appear slightly softer or darker in print.
This difference is completely normal.
RGB in Canva #
Canva designs are typically created using RGB color, since most Canva designs are meant for digital viewing.
This works well for things like:
- social media graphics
- website images
- presentations
- digital downloads
- online marketing materials
CMYK for Printing #
If you are designing something specifically for print, printers often convert the file to CMYK so it can be printed properly.
Exporting a high-quality PDF for print usually works well for most Canva projects.
Professional printers may sometimes request files prepared specifically for CMYK printing.
The Most Important Thing to Remember #
RGB and CMYK are simply two different ways of creating color.
- RGB uses light on digital screens
- CMYK uses ink on paper
Because these systems work differently, colors may not always look identical between digital designs and printed materials.
Understanding this difference helps explain why a design can look one way on a screen and slightly different when printed.
This is a normal part of working with digital and print design.
