Shipping Setup (Physical Products)

1 min read

Setting Up Physical Products #

If you’re selling physical items, this is where you tell Etsy how your product gets to your customer.

If you are only selling digital products, you can skip this section — shipping does not apply to you.

But if you plan to ship anything (candles, products, handmade goods, etc.), this step is very important.

Where to Set Up Shipping #

Let’s get you to the right place:

  1. Go to Etsy
  2. Click Shop Manager
  3. Click Settings
  4. Click Shipping Settings

👉 This is where you’ll create your shipping profiles.

What Is a Shipping Profile? #

A shipping profile is a saved set of shipping rules.

Instead of setting shipping every time you create a listing, you can:

  • Create it once
  • Reuse it on multiple listings

This saves you a lot of time.

What You’ll Be Setting Up #

Inside a shipping profile, you’ll define:

  • Processing time
  • Shipping cost
  • Delivery estimates
  • Shipping locations

We’ll go through each one.

Processing Time #

This is how long it takes you to:

👉 Make, package, and ship the item

Example: #

  • 1–3 business days
  • 3–5 business days

Beginner Tips: #

  • Be realistic (don’t rush yourself)
  • Always give yourself a little buffer
  • Customers prefer accuracy over speed

Shipping Cost #

You have a few options here:

1. Free Shipping #

  • Customer pays nothing for shipping
  • You include the cost in your product price

👉 This is very common on Etsy.

2. Flat Rate Shipping #

  • You charge a fixed amount (ex: $5.00)

3. Calculated Shipping #

  • Etsy calculates cost based on:
    • Package size
    • Weight
    • Customer location

👉 This is more accurate, but slightly more setup.

Delivery Estimates #

This tells customers:

👉 How long shipping will take after you send the item

Example:

  • 2–5 business days (domestic)
  • 7–14 days (international)

💡 Etsy may auto-fill some of this based on your settings.

Shipping Locations #

You’ll choose where you ship to:

  • United States only
  • Specific countries
  • Worldwide

Beginner Tips: #

  • Start simple (ex: U.S. only)
  • Expand later if needed

Package Details (If Using Calculated Shipping) #

If you choose calculated shipping, Etsy may ask for:

  • Package weight
  • Package size

👉 This helps Etsy calculate accurate shipping costs.

Be as accurate as possible to avoid undercharging.

How to Apply a Shipping Profile #

Once your profile is created:

  • Go to a listing
  • Scroll to the shipping section
  • Select your shipping profile

👉 Done — no need to re-enter everything each time.

If You’re Only Selling Digital Products #

You can safely skip this entire setup.

For Marlow Moon products:

👉 You do NOT need shipping
👉 You will always select Digital

Common Beginner Mistakes to Avoid #

1. Forgetting to add shipping #

Your listing won’t work correctly without it.

2. Undercharging for shipping #

This can eat into your profit quickly.

3. Unrealistic processing times #

Don’t promise faster than you can deliver.

4. Overcomplicating shipping early #

Start simple — you can refine later.

Quick Checklist #

Before moving on:

✔ Shipping profile created
✔ Processing time is realistic
✔ Shipping cost makes sense
✔ Locations selected
✔ Profile applied to listings
