Editing Text in PSD Files (Using Photopea) #

Sometimes you may receive a design file in PSD format. PSD stands for Photoshop Document, which is the file type used by Adobe Photoshop.

PSD files are often used for designs that contain layers, such as:

  • logos
  • social media graphics
  • marketing materials
  • templates
  • branding kits

These layers allow different parts of the design to be edited individually. For example, text, images, and shapes may all exist on separate layers.

Even if you do not have Photoshop installed, you can still open and edit PSD files using Photopea, which works directly in your browser.

This makes it possible to adjust text or export graphics without needing expensive design software.

Opening a PSD File in Photopea #

Photopea can open Photoshop files directly.

To open a PSD file:

  1. Go to Photopea in your web browser.
  2. Click File in the top menu.
  3. Select Open.
  4. Choose the PSD file from your computer.

Once the file loads, the design will appear in the main workspace.

On the right side of the screen, you will see a Layers panel that shows all the different elements in the design.

Understanding Layers #

PSD files are built using layers.

Each layer represents a different part of the design, such as:

  • text
  • images
  • shapes
  • background elements

Layers allow you to edit individual elements without affecting the rest of the design.

For example, changing the text will not move the background or images.

Editing Text Layers #

To edit text inside a PSD file:

  1. Locate the text layer in the Layers panel on the right side of the screen.
  2. Click the text layer to select it.
  3. Choose the Type Tool (the “T” icon) from the toolbar on the left.
  4. Click directly on the text in the design.

You can now edit the text just like you would in many other design programs.

You may be able to change things like:

  • the wording
  • font size
  • font color
  • alignment

If the original font is not available on your computer, Photopea may substitute a similar font.

Exporting the Edited Design #

Once you have finished editing the text, you can export the design as an image.

A common format is PNG, which works well for most digital graphics.

To export your file:

  1. Click File in the top menu.
  2. Select Export As.
  3. Choose PNG.
  4. Save the file to your computer.

The exported PNG image can then be uploaded into tools like Canva or used anywhere you need the graphic.

When This Is Useful #

Editing PSD files in Photopea can be helpful when you need to:

  • update text in a template
  • customize a graphic provided in Photoshop format
  • export an image from layered design files
  • make small changes without using Photoshop

Because Photopea runs in a browser, it allows you to access and edit PSD files without needing to install professional design software.

The Most Important Thing to Remember #

PSD files contain layered designs that allow individual elements to be edited separately.

Photopea can open and edit these files directly, making it possible to change text and export graphics even if you do not own Photoshop.

For many simple edits, Photopea provides an easy and free way to work with PSD files.
