Let’s Edit The Social Media Icons In Your Package #
Our branding kits include a set of custom social media icons designed specifically for our themes. These icons are created by us and are free for commercial use with the purchase of your kit.
Most customers will not need to modify these icons, as the standard set includes commonly used platforms. However, you may prefer to use different social networks or adjust the design to better match your brand.
This tutorial will walk you through:
• how the icons are structured inside Canva
• how to remove existing icons
• how to edit them
• how to place new icons from the icon library we provide
If you would prefer us to handle these edits for you, they can always be completed with a Style Change Ticket from our shop.
Accessing the Icon Library #
Your social media icons are provided in two Canva files.
Social Media Icons – 500×500
https://www.canva.com/design/DAHDxe_0Q9Q/TjV86h-7HUL_NO8YmIuM7g/view?utm_content=DAHDxe_0Q9Q&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link&utm_source=publishsharelink&mode=preview
These icons are 500 × 500 pixels and are ideal for websites or larger graphics.
Social Media Icons – 80×80

These icons are pre-sized to 80 × 80 pixels, which makes them easier to place directly into Canva designs like Etsy banners or social graphics.
Both files contain the same icon set, so you can use whichever version works best for your project.
Icons Included #
Inside each Canva file you will find icons for:
• Facebook
• Instagram
• Twitter / X
• TikTok
• YouTube
• Pinterest
• Etsy
• One blank icon template
The blank template allows you to add other platforms while keeping the same visual style.
You can copy and paste these icons into your branding kit whenever you want to add or replace a platform.
Understanding the Icon Layers #
Each social media icon shown in your design is made of three layers.
Background Shape
This is the rounded square or circle behind the icon.
Social Media Symbol
The actual platform icon such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, or X.
Text Handle
Your social media username displayed next to the icon.
In Canva’s Layers panel, these appear as separate items stacked on top of each other.
Understanding this structure makes editing much easier because you can adjust each part individually.
Removing Existing Icons #
If you want to remove one of the social media icons from your design, follow these steps.
- Click the icon area in your design.
- Open Position at the top of Canva.
- Click Layers to view all elements.
- Locate the three elements that belong to that icon:
• the background shape
• the platform icon
• the text handle - Click each item while holding Shift to select them together.
- Press Delete.
The icon and its text will now be removed from your design.
If you accidentally delete something, you can always press Control + Z to undo the change.
Editing the Existing Icons #
The icons in your design are fully editable.
You can change:
• the color of the background shape
• the color of the icon symbol
• the size of the icon
• the roundness of the corners
• the social media handle text
To adjust the corner shape of the background box:
- Click the background shape.
- Select Corners in the top toolbar.
- Drag the slider to adjust the roundness.
You can create anything from slightly rounded corners to perfect circles.
These edits remain editable even after placement, so you can always update them later if your branding colors change.
Replacing an Icon With a Different Platform #
If you want to swap a platform (for example replacing Twitter with Pinterest), follow these steps.
- Open the social media icon library in Canva.
- Choose the icon you want to use.
- Edit the icon colors to match your design.
- Click Position → Layers.
- Hold Shift and select every element of the icon.
- Click Group.
Grouping ensures the icon copies as a single object.
- Press Control + C to copy.
- Return to your branding kit design.
- Press Control + V to paste the icon.
- Resize and position the icon where needed.
You can now update the text handle to match the correct platform.
Adding a New Platform #
If you want to add a platform that is not included in the icon set:
- Copy the blank icon template.
- Use Canva’s Elements panel to search for the platform icon.
- Place the new icon inside the background shape.
- Adjust the colors to match your theme.
- Group the elements so the icon moves as one object.
This keeps the icon visually consistent with the rest of the set.
Great additions — these will prevent a lot of customer confusion. Below are the two extra sections written in the same style as the tutorial so you can paste them directly into your Notion document.
Why Your Icon Moves Behind Other Elements (and How to Fix It) #
Sometimes when you paste a new icon into your design, it may appear behind other elements or disappear partially under text or shapes. This happens because Canva places new items into the layer stack automatically, and sometimes they are inserted underneath existing elements.
If this happens, it is very easy to fix.
- Click the icon that is hidden or partially covered.
- Click Position in the top toolbar.
- Choose one of the following options:
Bring Forward
Moves the icon one layer higher.
Bring to Front
Moves the icon above all other elements.
If you are unsure where the icon is located in the design layers, you can also open Position → Layers and drag the element to the top of the stack manually.
This is one of the most common Canva behaviors and is completely normal. Adjusting the layer order will always fix it.
Keeping Your Social Bar Aligned After Removing an Icon #
All social media bars in our branding kits are designed so that the icons and text sit in a clean, evenly spaced horizontal line. If you remove one of the platforms, the remaining items may leave a gap or appear slightly off-center.
This is easy to correct with Canva’s positioning tools.
After removing an icon, follow these steps.
- Drag your cursor across the remaining social icons and text so that all remaining items are selected.
You can also hold Shift and click each element individually.
- Once everything is selected, click Position in the top toolbar.
- Choose Tidy Up.
Tidy Up will automatically space all elements evenly across the row.
- If needed, you can then drag the entire group slightly left or right to place it exactly where you want it.
This will restore the clean, evenly spaced appearance of the social bar.
Adding a New Icon and Centering the Row #
If you add a new social media icon, you may want to re-center the entire row so the icons remain balanced across the banner.
To do this:
- Select every icon and text element in the social bar.
You can drag across them with your mouse or hold Shift and click each item.
- Click Position in the top toolbar.
- Select Tidy Up to evenly space all elements.
- With all elements still selected, choose Center under the alignment options.
This will center the entire social bar on your design.
If you want the icons slightly closer together or farther apart, you can manually drag one element and Canva will automatically snap them into alignment.
Moving the Entire Social Bar as One Piece #
If you want to reposition the entire social media bar on your design, it is best to group all of the elements together first. This allows you to move everything as a single object without accidentally shifting individual icons or text.
To do this:
- Click and drag your cursor across the entire social media bar so that every icon, background shape, and text handle is selected.
You can also hold Shift and click each element individually.
- Once all elements are selected, click Group in the top toolbar.
This will combine everything into a single grouped element.
- You can now click and drag the group anywhere on the page to reposition the entire social bar.
If you need to edit something inside the group later, simply click Ungroup at the top to access the individual elements again.
Grouping is especially helpful when working with banners, because it prevents the icons and text from shifting out of alignment.
How to Duplicate an Icon Quickly #
If you want to add another social platform or repeat an icon style, duplicating an existing element is often faster than creating a new one from scratch.
To duplicate an icon:
- Click the icon or grouped icon element.
- Press Control + D on your keyboard.
Canva will instantly create a duplicate of the element in the same position.
- Drag the new copy into place and edit the icon or text as needed.
This is one of the quickest ways to maintain consistent spacing and styling in your design.
Keeping Icons Evenly Spaced #
To keep your social icons looking clean and professional, it is helpful to maintain equal spacing between them.
If your icons start to look uneven:
- Select all icons and text in the row.
- Click Position in the top toolbar.
- Select Tidy Up.
Canva will automatically distribute the elements evenly across the row.
You can then move the group slightly left or right if needed.
Resizing Icons Without Distorting Them #
When resizing icons, always drag from the corner handles rather than the side handles.
Dragging from the corner will resize the icon proportionally and keep the shape correct.
Dragging from the sides can stretch the icon and make it look distorted.
If you are resizing a full icon set, make sure the elements are grouped first, so everything scales evenly.
Undoing Mistakes #
When editing designs, mistakes happen and that is completely normal.
Canva makes it easy to undo changes.
Use these shortcuts:
Control + Z
Undo the last action
Control + Shift + Z
Redo the last action
This allows you to safely experiment with your design without worrying about breaking anything.
Helpful Tip When Working With Small Icons #
If the icons feel difficult to select, try zooming in on the design.
You can zoom in by:
• using the zoom slider in the bottom corner of Canva
• holding Control and scrolling with your mouse wheel
Zooming in makes it much easier to select small elements like icons and text.
Final Tips #
Always group icons before copying them into another design page. This prevents the elements from separating when pasted.
If your design becomes cluttered, use the Layers panel to quickly locate and organize each icon element.
Remember that every element inside your branding kit remains editable, so you can always return later and update your icons or colors.
Important Tip To Remember – You cannot “break” your design! #
If you ever feel like you’ve made too many changes or want to start over, simply click your original Canva template link again. Canva will create a brand new copy of the design so you can start fresh.
