Removing A Background For Free

4 min read

Let’s Remove A Background #

One of the most popular features in Canva Pro is the Background Remover. It allows you to quickly remove the background from an image so that only the main subject remains.

This is useful for things like:

  • product photos
  • profile pictures
  • logos
  • icons
  • cutout images for graphics

However, Canva’s automatic background remover is part of the Pro version.

The good news is that you can accomplish a very similar result for free using Photopea.

Photopea includes a tool called Magic Cut, which allows you to remove backgrounds and export images with transparent backgrounds.

This guide will walk you through the process step by step.

Step 1: Open Photopea #

First, open Photopea in your web browser.

Once the editor loads, you will see the main workspace where images can be opened and edited.

Because Photopea runs entirely in your browser, you do not need to download or install anything.

Step 2: Upload Your Image #

Next, you need to upload the image you want to edit.

To do this:

  1. Click File in the top menu.
  2. Select Open.
  3. Choose the image from your computer.

Your image will appear in the editing workspace.

Images that work best for background removal usually have:

  • a clear subject
  • good contrast between the subject and background
  • clean lighting

Busy or complex backgrounds may require a little extra cleanup later.

Step 3: Open the Magic Cut Tool #

Now you will open the tool used to remove the background.

In the top menu:

  1. Click Select
  2. Choose Magic Cut

A new window will appear with tools designed specifically for separating the subject from the background.

Step 4: Mark the Subject and Background #

Inside the Magic Cut tool, you will see two main brushes:

  • Foreground brush (used to mark the part you want to keep)
  • Background brush (used to mark the part you want to remove)

Start by using the foreground brush to paint over the main subject of your image.

For example, if your image contains a product, you would brush over the product itself.

Then use the background brush to mark areas that should be removed.

As you mark areas, Photopea will automatically try to detect the edges and separate the subject from the background.

You do not need to paint perfectly. Just give the tool a good idea of what should stay and what should go.

Step 5: Review the Cutout #

Once the tool processes your selections, you will see a preview of the image with the background removed.

Check the edges of the subject carefully.

If you notice areas that need adjustment, you can continue using the brushes to refine the selection.

Sometimes it may take a few small adjustments to get the cleanest result.

Step 6: Apply the Cut #

When you are satisfied with the result, click OK to apply the cut.

Your image will now appear in the editor with the background removed.

The transparent areas will typically appear as a gray checkerboard pattern, which indicates that no background is present.

Step 7: Export the Image With Transparency #

To use the image in other designs, you will need to export it as a file that supports transparency.

Follow these steps:

  1. Click File
  2. Select Export As
  3. Choose PNG

PNG files support transparent backgrounds, which makes them ideal for:

  • logos
  • cutout images
  • overlays
  • graphics used in designs

Once exported, you can save the PNG file to your computer.

Step 8: Use the Image in Canva #

After exporting the image, you can upload it into Canva.

To do this:

  1. Open your Canva design.
  2. Click Uploads in the left sidebar.
  3. Upload the PNG image you exported.

Because the background was removed, the subject will now appear cleanly on top of your design.

This allows you to place the image over:

  • colored backgrounds
  • patterns
  • graphics
  • other images

without a visible box around it.

When This Method Is Useful #

Using Photopea’s Magic Cut tool is especially helpful when you need to:

  • remove image backgrounds
  • create transparent product photos
  • isolate objects from photos
  • prepare graphics for use in Canva

It provides a free alternative to Canva’s built-in background remover.

A Helpful Tip #

Automatic background removal tools work best when the subject stands out clearly from the background.

Images with:

  • solid backgrounds
  • strong contrast
  • simple shapes

are usually easier to cut cleanly.

If the edges are slightly rough, you can often refine them using Photopea’s brush or eraser tools.

The Most Important Thing to Remember #

Canva Pro offers a convenient background removal tool, but it is not the only way to remove backgrounds.

Photopea’s Magic Cut tool allows you to achieve a very similar result for free.

By combining Photopea for image editing and Canva for design layouts, you can access many advanced editing capabilities without needing paid design software.
