Creating Transparent Images (Without Canva Pro) #
Sometimes you may need an image without a background so it can be placed on top of other graphics or designs. This is called a transparent image.
Instead of a solid background color, the empty area becomes invisible. This allows the image to blend cleanly with whatever sits behind it.
Transparent images are extremely useful in design and are commonly used for things like:
- logos
- overlays
- product cutouts
- icons
- watermarks
- design elements placed on top of other graphics
In Canva, exporting images with transparent backgrounds is normally a Canva Pro feature. However, you can create transparent images for free using Photopea.
This guide will show you how to do it step by step.
Step 1: Open Your Image in Photopea #
First, open Photopea in your web browser. www.photopea.com
Then load the image you want to edit.
To do this:
- Click File in the top menu.
- Select Open.
- Choose the image from your computer.
Your image will now appear in the editing workspace.
Step 2: Remove the Background #
To create a transparent image, the background must be removed.
Photopea provides several tools for this, but the easiest one is Magic Cut.
To open it:
- Click Select in the top menu.
- Choose Magic Cut.
A new window will appear where you can separate the subject from the background.
Use the tools inside Magic Cut to mark:
- the foreground (the part you want to keep)
- the background (the part you want to remove)
As you mark areas, Photopea will automatically attempt to separate the subject from the background.
Once the background is removed, click OK to apply the change.
Step 3: Confirm the Background Is Transparent #
After applying the cut, you should see a gray checkerboard pattern behind your subject.
This pattern does not appear in the final image. It simply indicates that the background is transparent.
If any unwanted background areas remain, you can clean them up using tools like:
- the Eraser tool
- the Lasso tool
- the Brush tool
Take a moment to check the edges of your subject before exporting.
Step 4: Export the Image as a PNG #
To preserve the transparency, the image must be exported in a format that supports it.
The most common format for this is PNG.
To export the image:
- Click File in the top menu.
- Select Export As.
- Choose PNG.
Make sure transparency is preserved, then save the file to your computer.
Step 5: Use the Transparent Image in Canva #
Now that your image has a transparent background, you can use it in your Canva designs.
To do this:
- Open your Canva design.
- Click Uploads in the left sidebar.
- Upload the PNG file you created.
Because the background is transparent, the image will sit cleanly on top of other elements in your design.
You can place it over:
- colored backgrounds
- patterns
- other images
- graphics
without seeing a white box behind it.
Why Transparent Images Are Useful #
Transparent PNG images are used frequently in design because they provide flexibility.
Logos
A logo with a transparent background can be placed on any color or image without a visible box around it.
For example:
Overlays
Graphics or decorative elements can sit on top of other designs.
Product Cutouts
Product photos can be placed onto marketing graphics or promotional images.
Icons
Icons can be layered into layouts without background conflicts.
Transparent graphics help designs look cleaner and more professional.
A Helpful Beginner Tip #
If you plan to use the image in multiple designs, it is a good idea to save the transparent PNG somewhere easy to access.
This way you can reuse the same graphic whenever you need it instead of removing the background again.
The Most Important Thing to Remember #
Transparent images allow graphics to blend naturally with other design elements.
While Canva normally requires Canva Pro to export transparent backgrounds, tools like Photopea allow you to create transparent PNG images for free.
By removing the background in Photopea and exporting the image as a PNG, you can easily create logos, overlays, icons, and other graphics that work perfectly inside your Canva designs.
