Locking and Unlocking Elements

2 min read

How to Lock and Unlock Elements #

Marlow Maison templates are designed to be ready to use with very little editing required. The layouts, spacing, and styling have already been carefully created so the design works beautifully as it is.

In many cases, you can simply replace the sample text or images and begin using the design immediately without needing to adjust the layout.

Please note that some elements in certain designs may not be editable or movable. If an element cannot be changed, this will be explained in the companion PDF included with your purchase.

Some elements may also be intentionally locked as part of the design. When an element is locked by the designer, it cannot be edited, moved, or unlocked within the template.

If you need something adjusted that cannot be edited within the template, you can purchase a Style Change Ticket or a Revision Ticket to have that modification made for you.

This guide will explain how to lock and unlock elements inside your Canva template.

What Does Locking an Element Do? #

Locking an element prevents it from being accidentally moved, resized, or edited.

This is useful when you want to protect parts of your design while working on other areas.

For example, you might lock:

  • background shapes
  • decorative elements
  • logos
  • layout elements that should stay in place

Locking ensures that the design structure remains consistent while you edit other parts.

How to Lock an Element #

To lock an element:

  1. Click the element you want to lock.
  2. Look at the toolbar at the top of the Canva editor.
  3. Click the Lock icon (the small padlock).

Once locked, the element will stay fixed in place and cannot be moved or edited accidentally.

How to Unlock an Element #

If you need to edit an element that has been locked, you can unlock it.

To unlock an element:

  1. Click the locked element.
  2. Look for the Unlock icon in the toolbar.
  3. Click the icon to remove the lock.

Once unlocked, the element can be moved, resized, or edited again.

When an Element Cannot Be Unlocked #

If a locked element does not show an unlock option, it means the element has been intentionally protected within the design.

When an element is locked by the designer:

  • it cannot be moved
  • it cannot be edited
  • it cannot be unlocked

This is done to help protect the layout and ensure the design keeps its intended structure.

If you need something changed that cannot be edited, please refer to the companion PDF included with your purchase, or you can request a change using a Style Change Ticket or Revision Ticket.

Locking Multiple Elements #

If you want to lock several elements at once:

  1. Select multiple elements by holding Shift while clicking them.
  2. Click the Lock icon in the toolbar.

This can be helpful when you want to protect a group of items while editing other parts of the design

A Helpful Beginner Tip #

If you ever feel like something in your design is difficult to move or select, it may already be locked.

Try clicking the element and checking the toolbar to see if the unlock option appears.

If there is no unlock option available, the element is likely intentionally protected as part of the template design.

The Most Important Thing to Remember #

Locking elements helps protect parts of the design while you work on other sections.

Marlow Maison templates are designed so that most users only need to edit the text and images, leaving the layout elements exactly where they are.

If you encounter an element that cannot be edited or unlocked, be sure to check the companion PDF included with your purchase for more information.

Important Tip To Remember – You cannot “break” your design! #

If you ever feel like you’ve made too many changes or want to start over, simply click your original Canva template link again. Canva will create a brand new copy of the design so you can start fresh.
