Switching to a Seller Account (Opening Your Etsy Shop) #

If you currently only use Etsy to buy things, this is your first step.

In this guide, we’re going to walk you through exactly how to turn your Etsy account into a seller account, where to click, what to expect, and what each step means — in the simplest way possible.

You do not need any experience to do this. Just follow along.

What This Step Does #

This step turns your regular Etsy account into a shop.

Once this is done, you’ll unlock your Shop Manager, which is where everything happens:

  • Listings
  • Orders
  • Messages
  • Shop design
  • Settings

Think of this as opening the door to your business.

Before You Start #

Make sure you have:

  • Access to your email
  • A few shop name ideas
  • About 10–15 minutes of uninterrupted time

That’s it — you don’t need anything else yet.

Step 1: Sign Into Etsy #

Go to www.etsy.com

In the top right corner:

  • Click “Sign in”
  • Log into your account

👉 If you don’t have an account:

  • Click “Register”
  • Create one using your email

Step 2: Go to “Sell on Etsy” #

Once you’re logged in:

  • Click your profile icon (top right)
  • Click “Sell on Etsy”

OR

You’ll land on Etsy’s seller page.

Step 3: Click “Open Your Etsy Shop” #

On the seller page:

  • Click the button that says “Open Your Etsy Shop”

This starts the setup process.

From here, Etsy will guide you through a few screens. We’ll walk through what each one means so nothing feels confusing.

Step 4: Set Your Shop Preferences #

You’ll be asked to choose:

Shop Language #

This is the language you’ll write your listings in.
👉 Choose the language you are most comfortable using.

Shop Country #

Where you are located.
👉 This affects taxes, payments, and shipping.

Shop Currency #

What currency your prices will show in.
👉 Most people choose their local currency.

Take your time here — don’t rush through it.

Step 5: Choose Your Shop Name #

Now Etsy will ask for your shop name.

Rules to keep in mind: #

  • No spaces (Etsy will remove them automatically)
  • No special characters
  • Must be unique (no one else can have it)

Tips for beginners: #

  • Keep it simple and easy to spell
  • Avoid numbers if possible
  • Make sure it fits your brand

👉 If your name is taken, Etsy will tell you — just try another variation.

💡 Don’t stress too much. Your shop name can be changed later (with some limits), but it’s best to choose something you feel good about now.

Step 6: Start Your First Listing (Don’t Panic) #

Etsy may now prompt you to create a listing.

This is required to open your shop — but:

👉 You do NOT need to finish it perfectly right now.

You can:

  • Add a temporary title
  • Upload a placeholder image
  • Fill in basics

We will go into full detail on listings in a later article.

For now, just get through this step so your shop can open.

Step 7: Set Up Payments #

Next, Etsy will ask how you want to get paid.

This includes:

  • Your bank account (for deposits)
  • Personal details (name, address)
  • Possibly identity verification

👉 This is normal and required.

Etsy needs this so they can:

  • Send you money from sales
  • Verify you as a seller

Important: #

Use your real, accurate information.
Do not guess or use nicknames.

Step 8: Set Up Billing #

You’ll also need to add a card for billing.

This is used for:

  • Etsy fees (like listing fees)
  • Any charges related to your shop

👉 Etsy will not randomly charge you — only for actual usage (like listings or ads).

Step 9: Your Shop Is Open 🎉 #

Once you complete these steps:

👉 Your Etsy shop is officially open.

Even if:

  • Your listing isn’t perfect
  • Your shop isn’t designed yet
  • You haven’t added everything

That’s completely okay.

Right now, you’ve done the most important thing:
You started.

What Happens Next? #

Now that your shop exists, we’re going to start making it look professional and ready for customers.

👉 Next step: Shop Preferences & Basic Setup

This is where we clean everything up and make sure your foundation is solid.

Quick Recap #

You just:

  • Signed into Etsy
  • Started the seller process
  • Created your shop name
  • Began your first listing
  • Set up payments and billing

That’s a huge step.

If anything felt confusing, don’t worry — we’re going to go deeper into each part in the next articles.

Just keep going one step at a time.
